Pomegranates at Breakfast

Pomegranates are wonderful! Not only are they beautiful on the outside with their deep red color and unique royal crown making them beautiful additions to centerpieces, the health benefits they behold on the inside are just as wonderful. Pomegranates are also in season during the fall and winter months, making them an excellent choice for a new fruit to try if you’re not already on the pomegranate bandwagon.

POMEGRANATE HEALTH BENEFITS

Pomegranates contain antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols destroy free radicals, or unstable molecules, in our body. When left “unattended” free radicals will cause damage to our body over time by destroying healthy cells. Research shows that the polyphenols in pomegranates and pomegranate juice can help reduce the risk of cancer, reduce memory loss, and promote post-workout recovery. Pomegranates have also been shown to improve gut health by promoting the growth of good bacteria. Visit the POM Wonderful website for more science-based information.

POMEGRANATES IN YOUR DIET

Inside pomegranates, you’ll find small, red jewels called arils. They are sweet, juicy and a bit tart. Here’s how to eat the arils:

  • Eat plain with a side of cheese

  • Top on yogurt

  • Mix with oatmeal

  • Top salads

  • Make a sauce for meats or veggies

The entire pomegranate can also be squeezed into 100% pomegranate juice for all of the same health benefits. Drink the juice plain, make a cocktail out of it, or use it to make this Pomegranate and Chia Seed Overnight Oatmeal for a quick and easy breakfast!
