3 Tips for Cheaper Meals

Feeding quick, nourishing meals is often thought to be costly. Data collected by the USDA shows that food prices are on the rise, increasing 0.9 percent from 2018 to 2019. The highest price increase was seen in fresh fruits and vegetables.

This data can be disheartening for large families or those on a limited budget. Fortunately, home cooked meals are one-third the cost of restaurant meals, and including healthy foods like fruits and veggies while on a budget is easy!

Purchasing local produce not only supports your local economy and fellow citizens, but because the food travels a shorter distance, inputs to get it to you are less, thus making the cost to you less.

Purchase in season. Fruits and veggies that are in season are cheaper than those that are out of season. See what produce is in season in this guide.

Take advantage of frozen produce. Frozen fruits and veggies are nutritionally equivalent to fresh, because the produce is picked and processed at the peak of freshness. Once frozen, the produce maintains its nutritional qualities for up to 18 months. It’s a great way to eat out of season produce any time of year at a lower cost.
